Obasan Modernizes Premium Storefront with Shopify Online Store 2.0 Redesign & Custom Mattress Builder
Founded in 1985, Obasan has built its reputation on a single principle: making the finest organic mattresses and bedding the way nature intended. Handcrafted in the company's carbon-neutral factory in Ottawa, every product is made from organic latex, cotton, and wool, and fully customizable to deliver the kind of restorative, personalized sleep that mass-market brands cannot offer. The Canadian company serves customers across Canada and the United States, with a business model built on premium products, deeply customizable configurations, considered purchase journeys, and the brand storytelling that supports all of them.
Over time, Obasan's digital experience no longer reflected the quality of the products behind it. The website's design and structure fell short of the brand's premium positioning, the path through complex product and customization choices was harder than it needed to be, and the mobile experience had not kept pace with how most customers actually shop. For a business built on high-consideration, highly customizable purchases and brand trust, the gap between product and digital experience had become a constraint on growth.
Obasan chose Molsoft for its ability to deliver premium UX and UI redesigns, balance brand storytelling with conversion performance, and optimize Shopify storefronts for high-consideration commerce.
Since partnering with Molsoft on the redesign and rebuild, Obasan has launched:
- A fully redesigned Shopify storefront aligned with the brand's premium positioning
- A custom mattress builder that guides customers through Obasan's full customization capability
- A mobile-first experience built for the majority of its customer base
- A modular content architecture that gives internal teams direct control over the storefront
The Challenge: When Storytelling Gets in the Way of Shopping
Obasan's core challenge was not a lack of brand storytelling; it was a lack of balance between
content and experience. The original website successfully communicated the craftsmanship,
natural materials, and care that define the brand. The challenge was how that story was
delivered.
For a premium, considered purchase, education is essential, but it should support the buying journey rather than slow it down. The website needed to preserve the depth of Obasan's story while presenting it in a way that felt intuitive, digestible, and aligned with modern e-commerce expectations.
The product journey itself added friction, and customization was where that friction was felt most. Obasan's mattresses are not off-the-shelf purchases. Products like the Deluxe Custom Organic Mattress offer fully customizable support systems with adjustable firmness at the shoulders, hips, and legs, dual-base configurations for couples with different needs, and
removable organic toppers for enhanced pressure relief. That depth of customization is a core part of the brand's value.
The challenge was not a lack of information, but a lack of balance. The previous customization experience included contextual information that was helpful for completing the original mattress- building quiz. However, customers were required to complete the entire process before they
could fully understand the product, compare features, or even see its price. Instead of learning about the mattress first and customizing it when they were ready, shoppers were asked to make complex decisions before they had enough context to feel confident. For many, what should
have been an empowering experience became an obstacle to purchase.
The redesigned Mattress Builder Quiz improves how personalized mattress zones are presented and better communicates each customer’s recommended mattress configuration, bringing much-needed balance to create a well-rounded user experience that inspires confidence in users.
Mobile compounded both problems. With most customers browsing on their phones, the existing mobile experience made content-heavy pages harder to navigate and customization decisions harder to make. The site asked customers to work through complexity rather than guiding them through it, and the cost showed up in engagement and conversion.
A redesign offered the right path forward. Rather than replatforming, Obasan chose to rebuild the storefront on Shopify Online Store 2.0, taking advantage of its modular section system to give the brand a flexible, performance-focused foundation without the disruption or cost of a full platform change.
"As our business and brand aesthetic evolved, we realized our website needed to evolve with it. The old website no longer communicated the same style and intentionality as the rest of the brand. We wanted an experience that better reflected the care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that go into every Obasan product. More importantly, we wanted customers to feel supported throughout their research and purchasing journey, with an experience that made it easier to understand their options and feel confident in their decisions." Obasan

The Solution: A Premium Storefront Built Around the Customer Journey
Molsoft approached the engagement as a brand-led redesign rather than a technical rebuild, treating the storefront as a direct extension of Obasan's craftsmanship rather than a separate marketing layer.
The new theme delivered a modern, minimalist UI aligned with the brand's premium positioning, with content and product pages restructured to support the way Obasan customers actually decide. Product pages were rebuilt to communicate materials, construction, and customization options clearly, removing the ambiguity that had introduced hesitation in the previous experience.
The centerpiece of the redesign was a custom mattress builder, designed to turn Obasan's deepest source of customer friction (customization) into its strongest moment of confidence. Rather than asking customers to interpret firmness zones, base configurations, and topper options on their own, the builder guides them through a short series of questions: mattress size, number of sleepers, and personal details like height, weight, body type, and sleep habits. From those inputs, the system generates a tailored configuration matched to the sleeper, and the Obasan team verifies every detail before the mattress is handcrafted. The result is a guided journey that makes the brand's full customization capability accessible to customers who don't arrive as experts, without flattening the depth that defines the product. For a brand whose value lives in personalization, the builder reframes that personalization as a confident path forward rather than a problem to solve.
Supporting the builder, an advanced filtering system helped customers narrow choices by attribute, and a product comparison tool gave them a way to evaluate options side by side, both designed to simplify a decision journey that the brand had previously asked customers to navigate alone.
The redesign was mobile-first by default. Layouts, navigation, the builder flow, and content density were all built around how the majority of Obasan customers browse, ensuring the experience scaled gracefully from phone to desktop rather than the other way around.
"Obasan's product quality was never the question. The work was about making sure the digital experience matched it, that customers could feel the same craftsmanship online that defines the products themselves. The Shopify Online Store 2.0 framework gave us the modular flexibility to build that experience without rebuilding the platform underneath it." Molsoft
A modular content architecture gave Obasan's internal teams direct control over the storefront. Marketing can update sections, refresh content, and respond to campaigns without developer involvement, and the underlying SEO content was restructured to support both discoverability and brand storytelling at scale across the Canadian and US markets.

The Results: A Storefront That Reflects the Brand
Following launch, Obasan's digital experience now matches the standard the brand has always set in its physical products. The storefront communicates the craftsmanship, materials, and care that define the company, and the customer journey through complex product decisions is structured rather than self-directed.
Customers benefit most directly. The mattress builder turns what was previously the hardest part of the purchase into a guided, confident experience, allowing customers to access Obasan's full customization capability without needing to be experts in firmness zones, base configurations, or topper construction. The handoff to the Obasan team for verification keeps craftsmanship at the heart of the journey, even within a digital flow. Product pages explain rather than overwhelm, filtering and comparison tools simplify the path forward, and the mobile experience supports the way most customers actually shop. Brand perception is reinforced at every step rather than undermined by a digital experience that lagged behind.
Internally, the modular content architecture has changed how the team operates. Marketing can manage and update the storefront independently, freeing the brand from the bottleneck of developer-led updates and giving Obasan a flexible foundation to expand storytelling and campaigns as the business grows.
"This project has given us a much stronger foundation for the future. Beyond the new design, we now have the flexibility to keep improving the experience, tell our story more effectively, and continue educating customers as we introduce new products and initiatives." Obasan
With a refreshed digital foundation in place, Obasan is now positioned to extend its brand experience across both Canadian and US markets, with Molsoft continuing to support ongoing optimization, feature development, and UX refinement, building on the platform without adding complexity to the way the business runs.
"From the beginning, Molsoft took the time to understand not just what we sell, but how we work and what matters to our customers. They were collaborative throughout the process and helped us create an experience that feels much more aligned with who Obasan is today."
