Shopify POS 11.0 Is Live: What’s New and What It Improves

TLDR

Shopify has officially released Shopify POS version 11.0, introducing structural improvements to the in-store selling experience.

This release focuses on improving how retail teams handle the highest-frequency tasks in POS: building carts, attaching customers, completing checkout, and finalizing transactions. Rather than introducing entirely new capabilities, version 11.0 improves how present workflows behave, with a strong emphasis on speed, clarity, and reducing interruptions during busy selling moments.

Here’s what changed and why it matters.

A Redesigned Cart and Action Flow

The most significant update in POS 11.0 is how the cart interacts with actions during checkout.

In previous versions, many actions opened in pop-up modals that temporarily obscured the cart. In version 11.0, actions now open in a dedicated left-side panel while the cart remains visible. This design shift keeps staff oriented within the transaction and reduces the need to backtrack.

The cart layout itself has also been refined. It is cleaner and easier to scan at a glance, making it simpler to review line items, pricing, and totals during checkout.

Additional workflow improvements include:

  • Multi-select functionality, allowing staff to edit multiple items at once instead of repeating the same action per line item

  • A reorganized “More actions” menu that now contains only order-level actions

  • Item-specific actions are placed directly on individual line items for easier access

Collectively, these changes reduce friction during cart building and make the overall experience more predictable for both new and experienced staff.

Smarter Add Customer Workflow

Attaching customers to transactions is one of the most common actions in retail POS, and Shopify has streamlined this experience in version 11.0.

Customer search now focuses on the fields staff use most frequently: name, email, and phone number, helping the correct record appear faster. When no match is found, staff can create a new customer inline, with fields automatically prefilled based on the original search.

Importantly, this entire workflow now opens in the side panel, keeping the cart visible throughout.

The result is a faster attachment flow and fewer duplicate customer records, which improves both checkout speed and data accuracy.

A More Continuous Checkout Experience

Checkout in POS 11.0 has been rebuilt to feel less segmented and more continuous.

The cart remains visible throughout the payment process, maintaining context starting from item selection to tender. Payment methods are easier to select, with larger tap targets and clearer visual states.

Cash and split payments now use an inline number pad displayed in the side panel, replacing the native keyboard. This reduces taps and simplifies corrections. The split payment flow itself has also been streamlined.

Shopify has also reduced transition screens, replacing them with smoother on-page animations. While subtle, this eliminates small delays that can compound during high-volume selling periods.

Together, these changes make checkout feel faster and more controlled without altering how staff fundamentally operate.

Post-Purchase Refinements

Version 11.0 also improves the post-purchase stage of the transaction.

Receipt selection is clearer, and post-purchase actions are easier to access. Buyer-facing screens on tablets and mobile devices have been refined to deliver a more consistent, polished experience once payment is complete.

These adjustments may seem incremental, but they help staff close transactions effectively and transition smoothly to the next customer.

Performance and Reliability Improvements

Beyond interface changes, Shopify has introduced performance upgrades across search, product selection, cart building, checkout transitions, and payment processing.

These backend improvements improve the overall responsiveness of the POS experience. For retail teams processing transactions throughout the day, small gains in speed and reliability have a meaningful operational impact.

What This Means for Retailers

Shopify POS 11.0 is not about adding complexity. It is about removing friction from core retail workflows.

The update keeps staff oriented on the cart, reduces repetitive actions, and smooths out transitions throughout checkout. For growing retailers and multi-location operations, these improvements compound across thousands of daily transactions.

As Shopify continues improving the in-store experience, updates like 11.0 reinforce the platform’s direction: faster, more unified, and built around real retail behaviour.
